Prayer times calculation methods

There are several methods to calculating prayer times, and the main difference among them is in the Fajr, Isha and Asr prayers, because the sun is not seen at Fajr and Isha, so their calculation is based on the appearance and absence of the red twilight and the angle of the sun below the horizon.

There are several methods that have been officially adopted in most countries of the world, including:

  1. Muslim World League (MWL
  2. Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)
  3. Egyptian General Authority of Survey (Egypt)
  4. Umm al-Qura University, Makkah (Makkah)
  5. University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi (Karachi)
  6. Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran (Tehran)
  7. Shia Ithna Ashari, Leva Research Institute, Qum  (Jafari)

Each of these methods depends on calculating a different angle of the sun below the horizon to determine the Fajr, Isha prayers.

Calculating the time of Asr prayer:

There is a slight difference in calculating the time for Asr prayer between the four schools of thought. In the Shafi’i School, the Maliki School, and the Hanbali School, the time for Asr prayer begins when the length of the shadow of an object is the same length as the object itself. In the Hanafi School, the time for Asr prayer begins when the shadow of an object twice its length.
